We had a mock trial called "Animal Court."

Mr Hare was charging Mrs Tortoise with causing him to be poisoned when he ate the carrot, then he to sleep and Ms Tortoise won the race.

The evidence was heard from Mr Hare and Ms Tortoise. Then two witnesses were called, the stoat was doing a lot of lying and then Mr Brown the farmer admitted he had layed poison to stop Hare from eating his carrots.

Judge Hooter asked the jury to discuss the evidence. The head juror reported that 10 jury members thought Ms Tortoise was not guilty of poisoning Mr Hare and one jury member thought that Ms Tortoise was guilty or poisoning Mr Hare. So the juries verdict was not guilty!

Ms Tortoise was very thankful not to be thrown into the Warkworth Police jail!

Bible Show By Kaylee

It was the last day of Bible today and the Bible teachers set up a little screen and told the story of Mary and Joseph and there baby Jesus. They started by picking random people. The screen was the barn and baby Jesus in the feed bin.

It turned into a lovely play for everybody. And they had really good costumes.

The people in the play did well with their parts in the play. My favorite part was the Shepard's and the angels were cool too. it was a awesome, I think everybody liked it as much as I did.

First we looked at the fruit and we copied it onto a piece of paper.Then we did a colour wheel with red, yellow and blue and then we had to mix the colours together that we needed like purple for the capsicum, dark green for the avocardo. I liked how the colours changed into pretty colours for the fruit. I liked the fruit because it had beautiful colours and it was the fruit I liked to eat just not the capscium. The pictures turned out really good, my picture is so good you could frame it. Our art teacher Mrs Lomas teaches us very well how to do things with art. She has done a lot of art with us. The art she does with us is cool.

We have been going to the life education in the past week.

Our topic was space invaders.

The first time we went Harold , a giraffe puppet

had seen an alien.

He plugged in his telescope into the TV and guess what? We saw a alien .

The brain told us about food and how it is made. He also told us where food comes from like processed food, food that comes from animals and from plants.

The next time we went on a adventure in to someones body and discovered what it is like to be a piece of food.

The second time we visited the Life Education bus Harold talked about living healthy and how we digest our food. We saw a doll called Tam that had no skin on!! so you could see where the food went, it was yucky!

I had lots of fun.

Storm came 1st place in Vaseline Saucer and Ryan came 2nd place and Kaylee came 3rd place. Lisa and Madison came no place in Vaseline Saucers .

We had to think of a pattern that was symetrical.

, like a mirror image if you cut it in half. Everybody did a great job at the Vaseline Saucers.My Favourite one was Callums.

On Thursday Room4 made vegetable machines.

My favourite one was Ryan's vegetable car, his came first. My vegetable machine was a toaster, I used a pumpkin and capsicum for the bread.It came highly commended. It was not easy to make the vegetable machines but they all looked really good.

On Friday it was Show Day, every body joined in our spectacular day. The animals that were there were calves, lambs and caged pets. The calves lambs and caged pets had all different sorts of prizes, some prizes were for dairy and some for beef, lamb prizes were for leading, calling and rearing. The caged pets had to be well cared for and have a diary about the pet.

Touch and Netball day

On Wednesday it was touch and netball day. We got put in to teams for the games. We had to play different local schools in touch and netball. We played touch 5 touch games and 5 netball games. We had lots of fun. The best thing about the day was Tomarata School wining our games. Thank you for all the parents who came to support us.

On Friday we had a Rugby World Cup day. We got put into different teams that represented different countries, who were not the main ones.

We played Ripper Rugby, and passing games and relays. We had to make up our countries flags, and a chant. We had lots of fun and it was a nice sunny day. Thank you to the parents who came to support us.

RUGBY MY GAME

On Saturday I woke up early ready to play rugby – I love rugby!

I grabbed my rugby boots, socks, mouth guard and tape. All the gear I need for rugby. I eat breakfast. I eat Weetbix because I’m a Kiwi kid, I’m just like an All Black.

I get dressed, take my rugby boots and all my other gear.

Ready to go outside, oh! It’s pouring down with heavy rain! We grab the wet weather gear and dash to the car. We’ve arrived and it was still pouring down. We got changed and it’s time to warm up. It’s cold, Brrr, but we run around the paddock, we do our stretches, it’s still raining, but I don’t mind. The stretches were so painful,

“Ouch” but it worked really well. Finally it’s time for the game to start, I’m nervous and scared. Tomarata, my team had to kick off to start. Our coach was the referee, he said “Ready everybody, we all yelled “YES”. Paparoa had the ball, they knocked the ball on. We got the ball and we scored, it felt great.

We kicked off again and Paparoa got the ball. The player ran straight through us. “Oh no”, then a good tackler missed him! I had to run as fast as a warthog to get him and I slid to tackle him and I grabbed the ball from him. “Yay” I felt good.

We kept on scoring and scoring tries– it was great!

I got 5 tries, this is my greatest achievement because I have never got so many tries in one game, and I was so excited and proud!!

At the end of the game the score was 50 to 0, we had thrashed them!!!

SWIMMING SPORTS CHAMPION – THAT’S ME!

RHIANNA

Today I woke up, shivering with nervousness, butterflies sneaking up my tummy, because today is swimming sports day!!

When we got there I sat on the cold concrete seats and waited for my turn.

Man, I was feeling scared!!!

Finally it was my turn. I got up and lepted into the pool. Burr the water was cold!!

We are going to do backstroke.

I zoomed along the pool,

Right arm, left arm, make big circles and pull hard.

Suddenly I touched the wall,

Wow, I was shocked.

Guess what?

I had come 1^st! I was so excited.

Next up, I did breaststroke.

Glide, glide , glide,

Froggy kick, breathe, arms.

I did struggle with that, because I find Froggy kicking hard. I got a 2^ndplace.

Next is freestyle. I dived in with a big splash. 1,2,3,4 arm strokes then a breathe. 1,2,3,4 arm strokes then a breathe. Kick those legs to go faster. I came 1^stYeah!

I waited for the junior girls winner.

And boom I was the winner! I was amazed. I was so proud because I beat my nerves and did my best.

I went home tired and weary, but beaming with happiness.

I went to bed dreaming of swimming sports my greatest achievement!!!

On Monday 28 a lady came from World Vision to talk about the famine.

She showed us a video about Lillie story. Lillie got teased by the kids in the village because she always had the same clothes and she only got one meal a day.

I did the famine too it was great fun. Idid it with Emma.

We got as certificate for doing it. $30 would look after a child for a whole year and we both earned more than that.

Water Quality Tests by Rhianna

Yesterday we went to Tomarata Lake on a school trip with class's room4,5 and 6.

When we got there we wated for Rachel Griffth's who is the Wai Care teacher, she showed us how to do the water quality tests yesterday at school.
When she got there we did the tests first like the pH test when you put a dip stick in the lake water to check the ph and alkaline. The ph was 0 in both lakes.Then we did a water clarity test with a big long tube that you look down and you run a magnet down the side and it moves the magnet inside the tube to see how far you can look into the water in the tube, then you can measure how far you can look. Tomarata Lake was clearer than Spectacle Lake.

For the macro invertebrate test Rachel scooped up water and sediment then she put it all in some white trays for us to identify the bugs, Tomarata Lake had more macro invertebrates. When we tested for nitrate and nitrite with a dip stick and both Lakes were good.We tested the temperatures with a thermometer, Tomarata Lake was 15 C and Spectacle Lake was 16C, and checked the dissolved oxygen both lakes got a 9 out of 10 so that was good , and we identified trees.

Then we walked to Spectical Lake and did the same tests again.

One day Mrs Hancocks came to scool dressed-up in her marching band clothes and with her snare drum.

Mrs Hancocks put on a show for us. She played the snare drum and told us the different ways to drum. She told us the names of her uniform.

It was really cool.

Then she came into each class one at a time.

When she came to our class she let us play the snare drum. That was really, really cool.

Teddy bears picnic

Room 1 did the Teddybears picnic. They were dressed up as little teddy bears. The girls wore furry gloves and headbands with Teddy ears. The boys wore hats with Teddy ears and furry gloves too. When they did there dances they looked cute. There was also a santa bear with a santa hat. I liked Tayla the best.

In Alice in Wonderland the mad hatter has a tea party. The people in the play are Hugo P as the doormouse, the Hugo C as the mad hatter and Michaela M as Alice and James S is the rabbit.

They were sitting at a large table, But they were all squashed up.The mad hatter said"All move one on".So they did.Alice thought this was very strange. So she walked in and they shouted"No room, no room". "Have some wine" said the rabbit."I don't see any wine" said Alice."Thats because there isn't any" giggled the rabbit.They wanted the young lady to tell them a story.But she did not know any story."So the doormouse shall". So the doormouse did "Once upoon a time there were three little sisters and they lived in a well".Alice kept interupting him. It was a really funny scene.

DRUG DOG VISIT

On Friday the drug dog came to Tomarata School, it was called India and it was a girl.
First the teachers lined up and one of them had a wallet that used to have a drug in it. It didn't have any drug but the dog could still smell it. It walked right up to Mr McNaughten because he had the wallet in his pocket. Then India got her squeaky toy, she really liked that and went squeak, squeak, squeak - she was really excited about that toy.
Then we all got to pat her, she was a very nice dog and very smart too.

SOCCER AND HOCKEY DAY

On Wednesday it was soccer /hockey day. First we got told to go and sit down in the grandstand at Port Albert.Then we had to get into our line with our group down on the grass and then the soccer/hockey games began.

We had a good team because we always won all of our games, the others tried hard to win.

I liked soccer the most because I am better at playing it then hockey. It was fun playing all the other teams from Tauhoa, Pakiri, Living Way, Tapora and us - Tomarata.

Sneeze safe

On Thursday the sneeze safe drama club came to see us.
They told us the four steps to keeping sneeze safe and they were TRAP IT,BIN IT,WASH IT and DON'T EAT IT!!
They told us to look out for a big blue germ.
And we found it and stopped him for once and for all by doing the four steps.
They were spraying us with water in little spray bottles because it was what happens when you sneeze.It was so cool.
It was a awesome day and now we all know how to be sneeze safe by sneezing into our hands or our elbow, then wash our hands.

Auckland Museum General

We went for a walk around Auckland Museum

it was fun. We saw awhole plane inside the museum, it was a war plane called a Zero.

Inside the museum they have an aquarium that has four crabs, one enormous crayfish and a little fish.

Then we saw a volcano movie about an eruption happening in Auckland, it was fun when the whole room shook like we were in a real earthquake - some girls screamed. But it was not real.

I saw the bones of a moa and it was so big, I did not know they were that big.

There was so much to see in the museum and I want to go back.

We went to the maori gallery at the museum it was awesome! We saw lots and lots of Maori carving there. We saw a Maori canoe flying in mid air that could seat 100 people!.
There was heaps of Maori knives and all kinds of other stuff that I can also say OMG too.
There was a Maori marae, it is so big that you can even go inside it but you have to take off your shoes. It is funny going inside a house when you are inside a big building.
I want to go again with my family because it was so awesome and you can't see it all in one day.

Auckland Museum Pacific Gallery

ROOMS 4,5,6 went to the Auckland museum. I saw some maori weapons and green stones and a big volcano. I saw some big dinosour bones, they were so big that they filled up the room. I went in a room like a lounge and their was a earthquake it felt like was like a real one but it wasn't.
In the Pascific gallery I saw a big canoe with a big sail on it.
We saw lots of weapons and spears and clothes made from woven flax. There was cloaks made from feathers too and they even had killed a kiwi for a maori cloak.
They had a map of the pacific islands and we found New Zealand, Australia, Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands.

McCain Vegetable Garden Visit

A McCain garden man came to our school and he talked to us about gardens and what to grow in them.Then Room 4 and 5 went into the library and he talked to us about gardens.
Then we went to the school garden and we talked about the plants and weeds and we looked at the fruit and veges.
Then we went to see the McCains red truck. It was the red truck on the add.
We got some photos with him by the red truck.Then Room 4 and 5 lined up to get a badge, it said "I'm a McCains vege patch school kid."

On Wednesday we went

to Athletics .First the girls did the 400 meter race then the boys.

After that I was in the

sprints.We did the 50 meter sprint and I came last because I tripped over at the start because I got a fright.But in most of the races Kaylee came first in the 75 meter sprint also in the hundred. In discus I came second. When I was about to do the 100 meter race my heart was beating and I had butterflies in my tummy. The best!! thing about the day was activities.

Yesterday we made emergency shelters with 36 sheets of newspaper, one roll of cellotape, 7m of string, one pair of scissors and one plastic shopping bag.

It was a real challenge.

At Tawharanui there were caves by the beach. They were very dark. We all ran into the cave and we found you could go from one cave into another cave. It was very exciting in the darkness and hearing the waves outside the cave.

The big waves were fun. Every one was running into the water the adults were making a space for kids and we were not aloud to go past them.

We loved swimming in the water at Tawharanui. The waves tumbled us around and we got knocked over. It was so exciting, I loved it!

TAWHARANUI ECOLOGICAL WALK

At first we went on a walk around Tawharanui Park. It went up hills and it was a big forrest full of birds and native bush. It was very pretty and I liked it. There was lots of steps it took for ages to go up them!.at the end we saw the beach and we wlked along looking in all the rock pools. It was a beautiful day. We stopped to play in the long grass it got ichy.When we went for a walk on the beach we found heaps of shells. We found some caves and they were cool as. Then we walked back to the place we started andwe had lunch. It was a very long walk and with the birds, bush, rock pools and caves it was an adventure.

TAWHARANUI PESTS

When rooms 4 and 5 went to Tawharanui Mr Pucket talked to us about pests.

These are the kind of pests he talked about - Cats ,Possums

Stoats,Weezels, hedgehogs, rats and ferrets. They are pests because they eat birds and their eggs.

He talked to us about the traps of Tawharanui. They put poison and traps out with eggs in them to catch the pests.

Tawharanui is a save place for the native birds to breed and be happy living without the pests.

WATER SAFETY DAY

We were pretending we were out on the farm and we had fallen into the dam or ditch or stream with our clothes on, because when you fall in you are wearing your clothes and gumboots.

First we got our gumboots and jacket on

then four people got up on the side ready to fall in. Then we jumped into the pool and we had to kick off our gumboots because you cannot swim with gumboots, they are so heavy , you would just sink to the bottom. Then we had to get our jacket off because when you jump in your jacket weighs about a ton and you can't swim so you have to get out of it.

It was so so fun, we did it again and again and now I know what to do if I fell into a dam or pond or river or the sea.

FLOATY FUN DAY

Floaty fun day was awesome beceause we got to jump on whales, also we got to jump on the other grey whale, lilos, blow up balls, masks and filppers - everything for the pool. It was sooo much fun!!!

There was heaps of different things to play with and we got to swap when Mrs Dunn blew the whistle so everyone got to try everything.

Everyone had so much fun, I hope next year we could do it again.

RED AND BLACK DAY

We had a red and black day to raise money for th Christchurch eathquake.

Everyone wore red and black and some kids like me changed our hair. On the day before red and black day Mum shaved a red cross in my hair. She put red paint in a cross on my head. I felt nervous but everyone loved it!

We raised a lot of money for the people of Christchurch.

Room four was the best room in the whole school six children won places in the inter school cross country.

Rosa got 1st ,Lily ,Sam & Ethan got 2nd and Nicky & James got third.

It was very hard, we were competing with five other schools.

The schools were Tauhoa, Tapora, Pakiri, Living Way and the best school Tomarata!

Walks around Martins Bay - By Max

On Monday and Tuesday we went for a long walk all around Scandretts Bay. It was tiring it took about an hour and a half on total of both of those days so it was about three hours of walking. It was a very big journey. We walked all around Scandretts Bay I was mostly at the front and some people were pushy.

We were not aloud in front of Mrs Dunn and the other adults were the sweepers so we were not aloud behind them.On the first walk we went on the nature walk behing the camp. We went past a big puriri tree, it was so big but not as big as a kauri tree. We went past little paths so we tried not to overtake people but some people did. Then we walked along the Scandretts Bay road and dropped down onto Martins Bay beach.

On the second walk we went up the Martins Bay beach, then we walked around the steep cliffs and went down to the Scandretts old farm, then we went up a really, really steep hill, we were climbing up to the road. Then we went back down the beach to camp. We were all puffed after that.

ARCHERY AT MARTINS BAY CAMP - NYAH

On Tuesday 23 we were doing archery - it was awesome! I've never done anything like that in my life. You had to set up the bow and put the arrow on the fletch holder. Rob showed us how to do it, he said you had to make a T-form with your body and stand up really straight. Then you had to stand sideways with your feet and think about where your head is.

It looks easy when Rob does it but it is not!

I got the arrows in the bushes three times .The third time it went in the thorns so I got the other side of the arrow where it wasn't pointy. After seven times I got the red part of the target and I felt pretty good to finally hit the target.

Rob was really funny.

Martins Bay Sailing - By Joseph

Sailing is really fun .I did it with Max. I learnt that the ropes on the sail are called the sheet. When I went sailing I was in charge of the rudder and Max was in charge of the sheet.

The sail boat was kind of slow. Then me and Max swopped places. Max was the rudder and I was the sheet. I went out really far out away from the beach. It was bumpy and the bout started taking in water but it didn't sink. I almost hit my head on the boom .When we went up to land we started hearing scratching noises and when I got out of the boat I was soaking wet. Sailing was really fun and I wanted to do it again.

On December the 2nd ten people were selected by the teachers (Mrs Dunn & Mrs Salt) to go to the cricket tournament at Warkworth, luckily I was chosen. Five schools were competing they were Ahuroa, Warkworth, Matakana, Mahurangi Christian and Tomarata.

Doing cricket was great fun we played three heats and one final in the final we came seventh and we won some Milo kiwi cricket prizes.

In our heats we versed Matakana, then Ahuroha and then Warkworth then in the final it was Ahuroha again.

It was a great day and I had an awesome time.

Camping out - sleeping - Lily

At camp we did a lot of things but I know after a long day all we wanted to do was have a shower, get in pyjamies & snuggle in the tent. But it was always a lot less simple than that! We all had hectic showers! Squabbling over who got in first, who to trade coins with. Then finally sorting ourselves out and getting into our sleeping bags.

In my tent I shared with two other girls. Called Rosa and Nicky. At night time we wrote in our camp diaries, talked about the day, told spooky stories that were meant to be scary but turned out always to involve a monkey man and in that case causing us to laugh.

Later on we did puppet plays, perhaps at 10 o'clock. We made our hands and fingers look like chickens and bunnies let alone wonkey tractors! And don't even get started with my completely over the moon type farmer! Anyway at 10:30pm we usually drifted off. But Nicky fell off her lilo and onto my inch high sleeping mat! So then I slept on the floor leaving only Rosa on her own comfy bed!

By morning we were almost every morning the last or first tent to wake up. It was a great camp and I'll never forget just how much fun we had!

Water Safety and Swimming - Kiarnan

The water safety lady talked about what to do if you are in trouble in the water. You put one arm up straight and you don't wave it or they will think you are happy. She showed us how you could use an empty large bottle as a float tied to a rope. We practised throwing the rope to our partner and dragging them in.
Then the man talked to us about hypothermia, that's when you get very cold after your boat has sunk. You should huddle together as a big group to keep warm. We practised huddling and I was in the middle when our whole class huddled because the smaller people go in the middle.
He also showed us how to put your life jacket on properly so it is tight and you won't slip out of it.
Then we went for a swim in our life jackets and we huddled in groups. It was fun and a good technique to keep warm in the water.

I liked the talent show my favourite talent was Hugos diablo. The bubblegum skit was really funny. Shane and Lukes one was cool because they both played one guitar at the same time, Luke strummed and Shane did the chords. Remo and Hugos duck food skit was funny when Remo kept asking for duck food and Hugo didn't have any. Then Hugo said he would staple his feet to the floor if he asked for duck food again. Then Remo said "Do have any staples?" and Hugo said "We're out of stock and Remo said "That's ok, do you have any duck food?"

The talents were very good and we laughed a lot.

Kayaking at Martins Bay. - Claire

When I first found out we were doing kayaking. I was kind of scared. I had never been kayaking before. My friends started jumping up and down. But when we started kayaking I realised how fun it is.
Larissa Davies and I paddled out deeper.Then out of the blue Scott came whizzing along towing Piripi from the rubber dinghy.It looked like Piripi was zooming along! He unrapped the loop that was holding Piripi's kayak to the dingy. Very quickly the rest of us caught up.
When it was time to swap kayaks we grabbed each others kayaks. Piripi was the first to move . He slowly crawled across. Finally we all had swopped and started heading out deeper. We grabbed each others boats. Darcie,Ethan,Kaleb and Piripi jumped in. Darcie flipped her kayak and Scott helped her get back on. Piripi flipped his to and Darcie had to help him. Finally we went back. That was a great day to remember.

MOUNTIAN BOARDING - Abbey

On Wednesday the 24 of November Room 4 did mountain boarding in our activity groups and it was really fun!I fell off the mountain board and got a wobbly tooth!!
First we had pushes on the flat ground and it was cool.
Then we did it on a small hill and that was OK.
Then did it from the top of a big hill and that was really scary!!! The mountain board was going faster and faster and it flipped and I fell off - then I went back to practising on the little hill.
We had to wear knee pads, elbow pads and wrist pads as well.
It was starting to spit but we didn't care,we carried on with mountain boarding because it was awesome.
Then it was afternoon tea. We had fun doing mountain boarding

Making instruments

We made instruments. I made a guitar. Matthew made a drum kit set and James made pan-pipes. It was cool seeing everyone elses instruments and trying to play them.

Then we made band groups and we learned how to play four beat music, then we learned how to play three beat music. We wrote our own music and then we practised and me and James and Matthew were playing our instuments.

We sounded so good that we got to play at senior syndicate singing.

Ukulele with Mrs Coop

At school we have been doing ukulele with Mrs Coop - we love Mrs Coop!

We are learning how to hold the ukulele and have been learning hard chords like

C,F,G7,D7,Am,A7 and G.

She has also showed us different strums.

We play lots of different songs like

"Hush Little Baby", "Shortlin Bread", "Quarter Masters Store",

"He's Got The Whole World In His Hands" and "You Are My SunShine" .

But my favourite song is "Quarter Masters Store" cause it rocks.

Today we learnt how to pluck on the ukulele which is sort of hard but fun.

After we have been to the Art gallery we went to Albert Park to have lunch before we went to the Orchestra.
I had my sandwichs for lunch and lots of other stuff to eat for my yummy lunch.
Then later on I climbed into a big hollow treewhich had lots of ways out of it. It was big...really big that you could sleep in the hollow cause it was like a cave.It was so much fun climbing into the biggest tree I have ever climbed in.
Then I walked all the way to the big cannons to have a look at them.
It was so cool, looking at the big cannons and climbing the enormous tree.

Auckland Art Gallery

After the library we went to the Art Gallery. First we saw Goldies paintings - they were so realistic they looked like photos but they weren't.

Then we saw the modern art and the sculptures. There was one that had two pitch forks, rope and the back window of a land drover ,it was my favourite piece of art.

One piece of art was wiered because it was a red and yellow half circle .

There was also a piece of art that had hills and a bird, it was by Don Binney - I really liked that one too. The art gallery was really cool.

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra

On the 10 of September rooms 4, 5 and 6 went to the symphony Orchestra in Auckland. The Orchestra was really cool with all those instruments such as the great Bassoon, the Flute, the Violin, the Violas and the cellos and my favourite was the great Doublebass - but there were many more.
The Conducter was so cool aswell. There was a really funny part when everybody was starting to clap but it wasn't finished! So the conductor put his hand up to say stop clapping.
After that it was time to go back to school. I really liked the Orchrestra it sounded awesome.

Yesterday Holly googled facts about kiwis and Leah,Norton and Rhys put them on pieces of card board then when we had enough. Holly drew a kiwi then I coloured it and its feet in. We coloured the beak yellow. Holly put SAVE THE KIWI over top and they drew squares. Then Rhys cut the title out so we stuck the rules and the title on the back. It looked awesome. We drew, coloured and cut out people and stuck them on stands. Every one put them on. We went to Mr McNaughten's room and went home The next morning we played other people games then voted. It was awesome!

Crazy hairday

On Friday we had crazy hairday it was so crazy.

I dressed up as crazy girl and I had ponytails with

toys in them like petshops. Rosa my best friend

dressed up with bubble wrap in her hair.

Sam had an umbrella in her hair and windmills it

was crazy.Rafe just had a crazy wig.

Me and Rosa put some stuff in Nyah's hair and she ended up winning! The prize was a flashy light.

But it was so much fun and I loved it.

We raise over $100 for the St John's ambulance.

On Friday Des Hunt came to Tomarata school and told us about his writing. He is a famous new Zealand author and has written 10 books - such as Cry Of The Taniwha,Crocodile Nest,Shadows In The Ice,Codys Unexpected Catch etc. He also did an experiment and made something that looks like water turn blue and then back again it was realy cool. He was talking about writing when he was showing us the science experiments because he was showing us that you need suspense in your writing.

I think I will read some of his books in future years.

Testing the stength of flax

For Science we had to test the strength of flax using the scientific method.

First we had to ask a research question. My question was "What is stronger flax, wool or string?"

Then we made a prediction. I prediction was that the flax was going to be the strongest.

Then we designed the experiment. We put the flax, wool and string on the wheels of the playground. Then we swung from them until they broke.

We found that the flax was the strongest.

The string was the second strongest and the wool broke straight away.

Our conclusion was that flax is a very strong fibre.

I liked testing and swinging our experiment.

It came as a shock to all of us to hear that Corey had died in a car accident.

I cried in sorrow and felt the loss we all felt of Corey's death,

It's OK to cry.

We cry for our friend

who laughed, played and grew up with us.

We cry for a boy we taught, who wanted to learn.

He showed us that everyone can learn - if they try.

We cry for our buddy that we used to help in class.

He showed us that we can help and support others.

We cry as parents who know how precious our children are

and how they are all special.

After the crying comes the remembering,

the talking of things Corey had done,

The laughing about funny little things -

like his enthusiastic singing,

or wanting to hug everyone.

I like to believe that no one is truely dead

while they are still alive in our memories.

So let's keep Corey alive by remembering him.

THE FIRE SHOW 2010.

On Wednesday the 12 of May the fire safety road show came to Tomarata School to teach us about how to get out of a fire.
We learnt -
1.) In a fire get out!
2.) Stop Drop and Roll-cover your face
3.) Don't touch the door with the palm of your hand.
4.)Don't put your laptop on bed or soft furniture.
5.) Crawl to get out in a fire.
6.) Shut the door to slow the fire.
7.) Never play with matches or a lighter.
8.) Check your fire extinguisher.
9.) Stay 1 metre from the heater.
10.) Don't leave a laptop/ cellphone plugged in over night- Unplug it.
I liked the theatre.

A NAVY UNIFORM

In March we were learning about Anzac day and me and Piripi got to wear Mr McNaughtens Navy jacket.

He told us that that it was really warm and he said the stripes on the sleeves meant that he was a Lieutenant.

I liked wearing Mr McNaughten's uniform, it was like I was in the Navy and Mrs Dunn said say "Aye, aye Sir"

And I saluted and said "Aye, aye Sir." and that means "Yes, Sir."

TECHNOLOGY MAKING POPPYS

On Thusday we had a poppy technology challenge. All the senior classes gathered up in room6 that's when we got our groups.

We got news paper , ten meters of cellotape, 4 peices of red paper ,1 pice of black paper and string.

We had to build the best one, we had 20 minitues to do it .

They had to be tall, strong and look like a poppy. The winning one was Aimies group.

I loved making the poppys because you go to make it how you wanted it and it was really fun.

Our group made a strong poppy and the leaves looked like they were just coming out. Nicola

ANZAC BISCUITS

We were learning about ANZAC soldiers so we decided to make Anzac biscuits.
Those soldiers were lucky to get those biscuits because they are sooooo nice! They would have been eating maggots and rice and living in trenches and going to the toilet in the trenches.
So they would have been relieved to get some yummy food from home.
I loved them I can't what antil next Anzac day. My mum said we made the best Anzac biscuits.

Waitangi Marae!

Last Week we went to the Waitangi Marae! It wasn't the main Marae we went to, but, still it was loads of fun! On the photo to the right, is a picture of the outside of the marae. The large arm type things coming down from the roof. Well they are meant to be the arms of Teko teko who stands proudly on the top of the Marae.

When we went inside there were loads of Maori carvings. Infact so many that the walls were basically made out of them! We had to really respect it by keeping nice and calm, leaving our shoes outside the Marae, not running around, and most of all NO shouting.

Ngati Kawa was the man who told us about the Marae. He was reeeally nice. He told us that all the Maori carvings were to represent different stories. For example: There was a carving of a women (the god of the sea) with her eyes closed as if she was praying. On the other side of the wall was a man who looked just like the women. Some how it relates to a story! I don't know what the story is! After he showed us around. We left the Marae and got on our shoes and went for an hour and a half bush walk!

Floatie fun day

On floatie fun day we brought our floating things to celebrate the last swim of the year at school. I brought my blow up ball and Rosa brought an earth ball.There were water guns and there were two big fat rings and all sorts of water toys.We were getting squirted. Then we swapped around so that the girls got the water guns - that was more fun! We swapped our floating water toys so everyone got a turn. It was a really fun day.The water was really cold too.

We made hot cross buns with Mrs Avery our Bible teacher. The buns were soft in the middle and hard on the outside. They were delicious.

It was lots of fun making them. They have across on top because that is the cross that Jesus died on and Easter is about celebrating Jesus dying for our sins.

Bikewise

I liked doing Bisewise. I liked going through the cones and putting your hand out when you went in a circle - that was a little bit hard. You had to practise your bike riding so you could pass the Pre Road test. I passed it. And we hand to learn about riding your bike on the road and we had another test and I passed it too. It was cool riding our bikes around at playtime and lunchtime.

Thank you Mr Watts, it was cool.

Waitangi mangrove boardwalk and Hururu waterfalls.

We went on the Waitangi mangrove boardwalk. It took one hour and I was hungry and thirsty . Like I was a cave man. The walk was very long and I felt very, very lost cause we just kept on walking. We saw some sand that looked like quicksand, we saw the mangroves growing in the mud and a humongous waterfall. The walk was a bit tiring but I still liked it, I would have liked it more if it was a shorter walk.

Waitangi Maori Canoes

We went on a tour with Ngati Kawa and Mrs Brown.

We went on a bush walk that was about ten seconds. When we got to the other side there was a bunch of waka .

There was a huge waka and three small ones.

The huge waka could fit 120 people in it that's quite big - I mean huge.

We all saw the tree that the waka was made out of. We sat on the trunk of the tree and all of us fitted quite easly. We had a photo and then we all went to the small waka.There was one in the middle one on the right and one on the left.

We lifted the waka. Ngati kawa said "He" and we said "Hi"then lifted it.

We went down to the beach and Joanna pretended to be Mrs Busby and some other kids from school welcomed her.

Then we went for another walk and saw a huge flag pole.It had a New Zealand flag , trading flag and a British flag.

Russel Ferry and Swimming

Today we went on the ferry to Russell. We went to where the Pompallier house is. Then

we went swimming. Most people swam along way to the tiny wharf in the middle of the water. It was a long swim and I mean long long swim! I felt really really tired when I got there. I jumped off the pontoon again and again - it was so cool! Everyone was jumping off and swimming, it was the best fun I've ever had swimming.

Easter play

In Bible with Mrs Avery we did an Easter play.Nicky was Jesus and I got to dress up as a Christian lady. Everyone got to dress up and act in the play. Piripi, Matthew and James were the soldiers. Pharoah was the King.

Jesus was killed on Friday and the soldiers put him into a cave and rolled a rock against the door. He was dead but three days later on Sunday he came back to life.

That is why we celebrate Easter.

THE OLDEST CHURCH IN NZ

On the second day of our Waitangi trip we caught a ferry to Russell. We visited the oldest church, it had bullet holes from the muskeets when the Maori and European's had been at war. They were very bad shots and they hit the church.It is still being used today. Most of the bullet holes did not make it through the wall. Outside of the church was a cemetery, we washed our hands before we went in and the same when we went out. One bullet hole was high up and made it through .The inside was super colourful, it had pillows on the seats and each had their own design.

SURVIVOR ROOM 4

Last week Room 4 did Water Safety Survivor and we wore gumboots, jeans and jackets in the swimming pool.

I wore Samantha's big, gluggy jacket and her boots.I was soooo heavy that I thought I was about to sink and then .... I NEARLY DROWNED.I was kicking but it was hopeless .

I had to get the boots off, so I kicked off the boots and slipped off my jacket. I could finally breathe. Now I know what to do if I fall into any water because you can buy more gumboots not another you so if you fall into water kick your gumboots off and take off your heavy jacket or jumper so you will survive. I survived falling into Tomarata school pool!

Oromahoe marae

Last week we went to Oromahoe marae and I loved it.

When we arrived we lined up at the gate and the boys went at the front. Then they started to call us onto the marae, it was kind of like singing.

We walked into the marae and looked at the ancestors. Then we sat down and the elder started to speak to us in maori but we didn't understand a word of it. When he spoke in English he was making fun of Tomato School and we all laughed.

We played outside for a while and then we had spaghetti bolognaise and apple crumble for pudding, it was yummy and we were very hungry.

We spread all the mattresses out in the hall. The girls were in the marae. It was like a really big slumber party but I couldn't sleep because there was a lot of snoring!

I will always remember my visit to Oromahoe marae.

THE TREATY HOUSE

On Thursday we went to the Treaty House to see the Treaty and learn about Waitangi. Mr and Mrs Busby lived at the Treaty house at Waitangi. Mr Busby wrote the Treaty and asked all the chiefs to sign it. They came to Waitangi to sign the Treaty and we saw Mrs Busby's tree which was a huge pine and the flag pole. Inside the Treaty house we saw muskeets and the things that the Maori traded with the Europeans like kumera's and food. We saw were Sarah Busby slept when the maori saved her from a group of people fighting and we saw a copy of the Treaty.

athletics day

Two weeks a go we had athletics. Saffy got a place in the 100 metres 50 and 75. Darcie came fifth in all the races. Darcie felt happy to come fifth and Saffy felt happy because she came second twice and third once! Saffy came in all the finals. I felt good for Saffy for coming in the finals! I bet she was happy for coming third and second. Darcie was happy watching Saffy and her friends running in a race. Darcie and Saffy were yelling "Go Tomarata!" Some of Tomarata were in the lead - it's Darcie and Saffy, yes some of Tomarata are in the lead.

Then me and Saffy ran back down to do the next activity which was high jump. One of the ladys said "If you are in the high jump finals come and line up." I wasn't in the finals so we practised.

I enjoyed athletics day, it was fun.

POMPALLIER HOUSE!!!

On Friday the 26th of March we went to Pompallier house. We had one helper who showed us around and told us about the things inside the house. We saw an old prnting machine and a vat with bark, and urine for tanning. Michaela got to pull out the bark dye that they were using for tanning and it smelt bad... really bad!

We went into the printing workshop and choose a metal letter each. They were used to make the letters in the printing. She showed us how to ink up the printing and Tamson used the printing press to make a picture of the olden day printers.

I liked the dead rats, they were mummified by the lime they used to make concrete - concrete rats...ha,ha,ha!
